Product Reviews for New Moms

This past weekend, I was invited to a friend’s baby shower. Before heading to the event, I went to Target to grab a gift for the happy family. Little did I know that I had NO idea what I was even looking at? I don’t have any children and the thought of it honestly churns my stomach with worry (but that’s another long spiel). I ended up just grabbing a gift card. Better just leave it up to the experts.

Later at the party, I was watching her open gift after gift of all these strange devices. Bottle warmers, bath tub holder things, onesies, breast pumps. I was floored how foreign this world is to me. There’s no way ALL of these things are necessary, but I was told plainly that they are. I decided to take a look into the world of new moms and babies to see what kind of products create the most success…or not.

Stylish Diaper Bags

I didn’t even know this was a thing (surprise, surprise). Apparently, people don’t like visually screaming “I’m a mom” in public. The diaper bags of my mother’s era were these bulky, ugly themed bags that were slung over your tired shoulders or thrown in the back of the Astro van. Now, you can get leather, sleek looking styled backpacks. They honestly look like high end purses! With women now expected to do and be it all, it makes sense that this natural transition has happened. We can go from changing a diaper to taking out the pocket book on a night out.

Running Strollers

My sister actually requested one of these for her first newborn. It’s essentially a regular stroller, but on steroids. The wheels are a thicker rubber material, and boast a heftier frame, as well as a heftier price tag. That thing was like at least a grand! Yet another passive aggressive way of telling ladies, hey get back into pre-baby shape as fast as possible! You have to be a HOT MOM! (I honestly don’t know why I’m so passionate about this injustice that does not involve me at all)

Video Monitors

Just when you thought having a baby wasn’t expensive enough, now we have to have 24/7 video surveillance of the little miracle in HD. I remember the cheap plastic one way voice monitors of yesteryear where you would steal them to use as walkie talkies, even though you couldn’t hear anything back. I understand that accidents can happen to your child in the night, but if they’re literally in the same house, what is the point? Maybe I’m just too out of touch on the necessity.

Convertible Cribs

Well technically, all cribs are convertibles (uncomfortable laughter*). What I mean is that the market has been coming out with cribs that actually can be converted into small beds for when the little tyke grows out of it. I actually think this is a brilliant idea. The notion of throwing away an old crib makes for unnecessary garbage waste. I’m all for reusing and recycling, and it’s cost-effective too!

Mobile Changing Station

Another brilliant idea, in my humble opinion, is the mobile changing station. Can you you imagine having to use those disgusting trays in public restrooms to change your delicate little newborn baby? I wouldn’t get my purse on that, let alone my baby. I love how it’s compact so you can easily carry it with you, and it’s discrete. I would MUCH rather run to the car and change a baby on this than anything offered.

What are some other new mom must haves? I’m curious in case I ever decide to procreate. Comment below!
